People at work don’t know what to say about the fact that I’m a 35-year-old single woman. \u00c2\u00a0Single Asian Female. \u00c2\u00a0SAF. \u00c2\u00a0They don’t know what to say and sometimes they don’t know how to act around me.<\/p>\n
I think I’m an enigma to a lot of people. \u00c2\u00a0I look like I’m in my 20’s but I’m actually in my mid-30’s.<\/p>\n
Some people, at first, started treating and talking to me a certain way. \u00c2\u00a0Then, when they found out how old I am, synapses were activated and gears shifted and people were baffled.<\/p>\n
Yeah. \u00c2\u00a0I get it. \u00c2\u00a0Women my age in my company are more senior and they have children around the age or 7 or 8 years old. \u00c2\u00a0I’m a career changer. \u00c2\u00a0I’m late to the game.<\/p>\n
Today, a manager (not one of my direct managers) told me he was doing yard work over the long holiday weekend and the conversation goes a little something like this:<\/p>\n
Manager: \u00c2\u00a0You’ll never have a house.<\/p>\n
Me: \u00c2\u00a0What do you mean?<\/p>\n
Manager: \u00c2\u00a0I mean, you don’t want one.<\/p>\n
Me: \u00c2\u00a0Why do you say that?<\/p>\n
Manager: \u00c2\u00a0It’s just not you.<\/p>\n
Me: \u00c2\u00a0Oh, you think I’m more like a condo kind of person?<\/p>\n
Manager: \u00c2\u00a0Yeah, I guess. \u00c2\u00a0You don’t want a house.<\/p>\n
Me: \u00c2\u00a0Why do you say that? \u00c2\u00a0You think I’m a city kind of person?<\/p>\n
Manager: \u00c2\u00a0Yeah. You’re not going to have a family or anything. \u00c2\u00a0You don’t need a house.<\/p>\n
Me: \u00c2\u00a0You think so? \u00c2\u00a0I actually really love children.<\/p>\n
Manager: \u00c2\u00a0That doesn’t matter. \u00c2\u00a0You can love children and not want a family.<\/p>\n
Me: \u00c2\u00a0What makes you think I don’t want a family? \u00c2\u00a0How do you know I’m even single?<\/p>\n
Manager: \u00c2\u00a0Oh, come on! \u00c2\u00a0It’s just not you. \u00c2\u00a0You don’t even have a boyfriend.<\/p>\n
Me: \u00c2\u00a0How do you even know?<\/p>\n
Manager: \u00c2\u00a0Because you never say anything about him and you are never in a rush to get out. \u00c2\u00a0You have a ton of time on your hands. \u00c2\u00a0(So what if I’ve planned many happy \u00c2\u00a0hours??)<\/p>\n
I tried to stay mysterious about whether or not I have a boyfriend so I brushed off the conversation at the time and we talked about some other things.<\/p>\n
I came home after work and had a glass of wine. \u00c2\u00a0I was in tears.<\/p>\n
Could he be right? \u00c2\u00a0Is he completely wrong? \u00c2\u00a0Is this what people think of me? \u00c2\u00a0Is this what I want people to think of me?<\/p>\n
