{"id":195,"date":"2013-11-19T03:44:40","date_gmt":"2013-11-19T03:44:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.motebu.com\/?p=195"},"modified":"2013-11-19T03:53:18","modified_gmt":"2013-11-19T03:53:18","slug":"holden-caulfield-second-date","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.motebu.com\/?p=195","title":{"rendered":"Holden Caulfield: Second Date (?)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last Friday night Holden Caulfield invited me to go to a Rutgers University football game on Saturday. \u00c2\u00a0He said he needed to pick some things up at his dad&#8217;s house then we could head to the game.<\/p>\n<p>Me: \u00c2\u00a0We&#8217;re going to your dad&#8217;s house? \u00c2\u00a0Does that mean I&#8217;ll meet your dad and step-mom? . . . (I felt very hesitant about this. . . )<\/p>\n<p>HC: \u00c2\u00a0Well, they probably won&#8217;t be home. \u00c2\u00a0It shouldn&#8217;t be a problem.<\/p>\n<p>. . .<\/p>\n<p>. . .<\/p>\n<p>He is right, it&#8217;s not a big deal but not something I expected to do the second time I hang out with HC.<\/p>\n<p>It a bit of a last minute invitation and had some things planned for my Saturday so after some thinking I decided to go. \u00c2\u00a0Why not?<\/p>\n<p>He went out for a friend&#8217;s birthday on Friday night so he asked me to give him a wake-up call a half hour before I was going to meet him.<\/p>\n<p>He offered to pick me up again, then drive into NJ. \u00c2\u00a0I reassured him I could make my way over to his apartment early in the morning (9:30am). \u00c2\u00a0But, I did think it was sweet that he offered to pick me up. \u00c2\u00a0I just thought it didn&#8217;t make sense logistically. \u00c2\u00a0(See? \u00c2\u00a0I can be very sensible. \u00c2\u00a0The guy I dated over the summer told me this all the time.)<\/p>\n<p>The next morning I was obedient and called him at 9am. \u00c2\u00a0He was still sleeping and my call woke him up.<\/p>\n<p>I got to his place. \u00c2\u00a0This is the place he told me he was moving into, a couple of entries ago.<\/p>\n<p>Total bachelor pad. \u00c2\u00a0Probably about half the size of my apartment and my apartment is 700 sq ft. \u00c2\u00a0Not all moved in, stuff still in boxes. \u00c2\u00a0Two large TVs mounted on the walls of his living room and bedroom. \u00c2\u00a0Half of a sectional, a partial delivery. \u00c2\u00a0(I take a deep breath)<\/p>\n<p>So I thought to myself: \u00c2\u00a0&#8220;Ok, I&#8217;m going to be open-minded. \u00c2\u00a0Afterall, didn&#8217;t I offer to help him decorate?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#8217;t help but note the 10 year age difference in many instances. \u00c2\u00a0While I was sitting in HC&#8217;s apartment, he showed me some things like his TV and some other electronic gadgets.<\/p>\n<p>HC: \u00c2\u00a0[as he shows me. . . ] \u00c2\u00a0That&#8217;s so chill isn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p>Me:\u00c2\u00a0<em>Yeah. \u00c2\u00a0<\/em>[Very emphatically, nodding my head, even though I have\u00c2\u00a0<em>no idea<\/em> what exactly &#8220;chill&#8221; is slang for. \u00c2\u00a0Is it &#8220;cool&#8221;?]<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, I looked at what he was wearing and he is definitely of the next generation: \u00c2\u00a0his jeans were tighter than guys in my generation. \u00c2\u00a0A tell-tale sign.<\/p>\n<p>Later in the conversation at his place. . .<\/p>\n<p>HC: \u00c2\u00a0What time did you get up this morning?<\/p>\n<p>Me: \u00c2\u00a0Early. \u00c2\u00a0Like 7:30.<\/p>\n<p>HC: \u00c2\u00a0<em>Oh. \u00c2\u00a0<\/em>Like old people get up early. \u00c2\u00a0[Smiling at me]<\/p>\n<p>First old joke of the day. \u00c2\u00a0Zing!<\/p>\n<p>Siiiigh. \u00c2\u00a0This is going to be a long day. \u00c2\u00a0Plus, I wasn&#8217;t feeling completely recovered from the cold I came down with the day we went out for our first date.<\/p>\n<p>On the car ride into NJ, we talked about a bunch of things. \u00c2\u00a0Family, etc. \u00c2\u00a0It came up that his dad is a guitarist. \u00c2\u00a0(Wow, cool!) \u00c2\u00a0But, he also has a family busy. \u00c2\u00a0(Also, cool. \u00c2\u00a0Wait, I mean <em>so<\/em> chill. . . )<\/p>\n<p>He asked me if I played any music.<\/p>\n<p>Of course. \u00c2\u00a0I&#8217;m Korean American: \u00c2\u00a0the piano. \u00c2\u00a0I can strum the guitar. \u00c2\u00a0Then, I reciprocated the question.<\/p>\n<p>HC: \u00c2\u00a0I play a little of this and that. \u00c2\u00a0I played a little clarinet. \u00c2\u00a0I little of other things.<\/p>\n<p>He told me more about his dad. \u00c2\u00a0How he traveled the world, touring for his band, and how HC went to different countries to see his dad&#8217;s band play.<\/p>\n<p>This sparked my curiosity. . .<\/p>\n<p>Me: \u00c2\u00a0So, what band is your dad in? \u00c2\u00a0[Inquisitively. \u00c2\u00a0And I am scouring my brain to think of NJ bands that are popular enough to tour the world and would be in his dad&#8217;s age bracket &#8212; Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street band? \u00c2\u00a0Bon Jovi? \u00c2\u00a0Nah, they are too young. \u00c2\u00a0No others come to mind.]<\/p>\n<p>HC: \u00c2\u00a0He was in a band called the ____. \u00c2\u00a0They played at Clinton&#8217;s inaugural balls, here, here&#8217;s what they sound like.<\/p>\n<p>And they are blues cover songs and music but it is good. \u00c2\u00a0I&#8217;m still impressed. \u00c2\u00a0I love musicians.<\/p>\n<p>. . .<\/p>\n<p>As we drove into NJ, HC was a great tour guide. \u00c2\u00a0He drove through Rutgers, wait, New Brunswick (right?), and showed me things. \u00c2\u00a0The places he lived while he was in college, old bars he used to hang out with. \u00c2\u00a0So, so sweet. \u00c2\u00a0I love those things. \u00c2\u00a0Nostalgia. \u00c2\u00a0I can tell HC is a sentimental person and I definitely appreciate that because I am too.<\/p>\n<p>We stopped at a cute breakfast place he used to love in college and had a quick bite to eat. \u00c2\u00a0We parked in his usual spot and had to walk about a bit to the stadium. \u00c2\u00a0He told me we had to walk into the next town. \u00c2\u00a0Parsippany? \u00c2\u00a0P_____? \u00c2\u00a0Not sure.<\/p>\n<p>It was a bit of a walk, but it was such a nice fall day, I didn&#8217;t mind.<\/p>\n<p>HC bought some tickets off some scalpers and we were all set to watch the game.<\/p>\n<p>HC: \u00c2\u00a0Did you know that Rutgers is the birthplace of college football?<\/p>\n<p>Me: \u00c2\u00a0No, I didn&#8217;t!<\/p>\n<p>HC: \u00c2\u00a0Yeah, they even have a place where it says it in the stadium. \u00c2\u00a0[Ok, if you say so. \u00c2\u00a0And indeed, it is true. \u00c2\u00a0They have those exact words painted in the stadium.]<\/p>\n<p>On the walk over to the stadium, HC was an incredible gentlemen. \u00c2\u00a0We had to walk closely along the side of the road and he quickly made sure I was on the inside. \u00c2\u00a0All through the day, HC made sure the temperature was right for me in the car, that I had enough water, that I wasn&#8217;t hungry or needed a coffee.<\/p>\n<p>As we were walking, he looked over at me, took a deep breath, exhaled, and raised his eyebrows,\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0and said, &#8220;It&#8217;s going to be a long game. \u00c2\u00a0You got your Depends on?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sigh. \u00c2\u00a0Second old joke. \u00c2\u00a0But don&#8217;t worry, HC makes jokes about how young he is too as he tells me about his college town and says it was just last year these things happened. \u00c2\u00a0[OMG please don&#8217;t tell me it was last year! &#8212; Don&#8217;t worry, it wasn&#8217;t last year]<\/p>\n<p>Me: \u00c2\u00a0It&#8217;s a good thing you have good delivery. \u00c2\u00a0Otherwise, your &#8216;old&#8217; jokes would suck.<\/p>\n<p>We found our seats and HC asked me if I brought my shades. \u00c2\u00a0I told him I left them at my sister&#8217;s and didn&#8217;t have them on me so he insisted I wear his. \u00c2\u00a0Especially since the scoreboard was in front of the sun.<\/p>\n<p>Me: \u00c2\u00a0No no no, you wear them! \u00c2\u00a0It&#8217;s ok. \u00c2\u00a0I can deal.<\/p>\n<p>HC: \u00c2\u00a0No, it&#8217;s ok! \u00c2\u00a0I have thick eyebrows. \u00c2\u00a0[That made me smile]<\/p>\n<p>There was a little bit of back and forth.<\/p>\n<p>Periodically, I tried to give back his sunglasses and he always refused. \u00c2\u00a0Later, the sun hid behind the clouds and I gave back his sunglasses and he accepted. \u00c2\u00a0Then, the sun came back out and he immediately made me wear his sunglasses again.<\/p>\n<p>It was 4 minutes until halftime and the Scarlet Knights were very badly losing (38-7) so HC wanted to get outta there.<\/p>\n<p>We split. \u00c2\u00a0Got to his car then headed to his dad&#8217;s house to pick up some things.<\/p>\n<p>We got there and there was no one home. \u00c2\u00a0Thank God. \u00c2\u00a0Holden Caulfield showed me around. \u00c2\u00a0Showed me the expansion they did, the deck he helped install. \u00c2\u00a0I love these things.<\/p>\n<p>HC got me a water and we had a seat in the living room. \u00c2\u00a0Since his dad is a guitar player so there are a ton of nice guitars around.<\/p>\n<p>HC picked up a guitar and started jamming on it. \u00c2\u00a0He&#8217;s a great guitar player.<\/p>\n<p>Me: \u00c2\u00a0Why didn&#8217;t you list &#8216;guitar&#8217; as one of the instruments you play?!<\/p>\n<p>HC shrugs his shoulders. \u00c2\u00a0Smiled.<\/p>\n<p>He keeps jamming and jamming and I can&#8217;t help but fantasize about singing to songs he is playing on the guitar. \u00c2\u00a0But, I didn&#8217;t say anything about my love for singing because I was afraid he&#8217;d put me on the spot. \u00c2\u00a0But I suppose I could have brought it on. \u00c2\u00a0No, I know I could have.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, his step mom came home. \u00c2\u00a0We shook hands, blah blah. \u00c2\u00a0She was a really nice woman.<\/p>\n<p>Then, his dad comes home and he looks like an older version of HC. \u00c2\u00a0And I couldn&#8217;t help but think that they are looking at me and thinking, &#8220;Why is this old girl interested in our son??&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His dad was really nice. \u00c2\u00a0Started immediately playing the guitar too. \u00c2\u00a0I thought that was so sweet.<\/p>\n<p>And eventually, HC got the things he came for. \u00c2\u00a0And showed me the basement where the band practices. \u00c2\u00a0It&#8217;s like paradise. \u00c2\u00a0I would love to sing with their band and rock out with them.<\/p>\n<p>We left the house and said our salutations and pleasantries.<\/p>\n<p>As we drove back, we were clearly tired. \u00c2\u00a0HC &#8212; because he didn&#8217;t sleep much last night and me, because I am feeling under the weather. \u00c2\u00a0I fell asleep in the car for a few minutes and he sweetly encouraged me to sleep more. \u00c2\u00a0I can&#8217;t help but fall asleep in moving vehicles. \u00c2\u00a0My brother likes to tease me about that.<\/p>\n<p>We got back into the City and Holden Caulfield was trying to think of the best way to drop me off at home but he was in a rush to meet his friend back at his place and eventually his dad and step-mom because they were going to a concert. \u00c2\u00a0(He goes to concerts with his dad :))<\/p>\n<p>I told him not to worry about me that I&#8217;d make my way back home from his place via subway. \u00c2\u00a0That is normal, after all, but I appreciate his gesture of taking me home.<\/p>\n<p>We arrived at his place. \u00c2\u00a0We got out the car. \u00c2\u00a0His friend had driven up right behind us. \u00c2\u00a0We gave each other a kiss on the cheek and I went home.<\/p>\n<p>When I got out of the subway, I got this text from HC: \u00c2\u00a0&#8220;:) \ud83d\ude42 \ud83d\ude42 :)&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I got home and felt terribly lonely. \u00c2\u00a0HC is 10 years younger than me. \u00c2\u00a0This will never work out. \u00c2\u00a0And I couldn&#8217;t help but cry a little about it.<\/p>\n<p>. . .<\/p>\n<p>. . .<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m just going to pretend I am this glass globe:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.motebu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Screen-shot-2013-11-18-at-10.32.20-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-196\" alt=\"Screen shot 2013-11-18 at 10.32.20 PM\" src=\"http:\/\/www.motebu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Screen-shot-2013-11-18-at-10.32.20-PM-300x202.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.motebu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Screen-shot-2013-11-18-at-10.32.20-PM-300x202.png 300w, http:\/\/www.motebu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Screen-shot-2013-11-18-at-10.32.20-PM.png 623w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last Friday night Holden Caulfield invited me to go to a Rutgers University football game on Saturday. \u00c2\u00a0He said he needed to pick some things up at his dad&#8217;s house then we could head to the game.
