A week ago, today, I met “Holden Caulfield”.<\/p>\n

After work, I went to spend about two hours doing some volunteer work in Greenwich Village. \u00c2\u00a0As I stepped out of the building, there were some steep steps where I needed to deeply bend over from the 2nd or 3rd step to unlock the gate in front of me.<\/p>\n

New Yorkers, I think you might know what I am talking about. \u00c2\u00a0Squished spaces, steep steps, little clearance from a doorway to a curb.<\/p>\n

I walked out the gate, looked up, and saw a young man walking towards me down the sidewalk with a nice, clear smile on his face, smiling at me.<\/p>\n

We made eye-contact, so I smiled back.<\/p>\n

He says, “Hi.”<\/p>\n

Me: \u00c2\u00a0Hi. \u00c2\u00a0[Smile]<\/p>\n

Holden: \u00c2\u00a0I thought you were going to fall off those stairs, so I was preparing myself to catch you.<\/p>\n

Me: \u00c2\u00a0Oh, back there? \u00c2\u00a0Oh, you thought I was going to fall? \u00c2\u00a0(And) Oh, you were going to\u00c2\u00a0catch\u00c2\u00a0<\/em>me if I fell?<\/p>\n

. . .<\/p>\n

We are walking and talking. . .<\/p>\n

Me: \u00c2\u00a0[I look at Holden] \u00c2\u00a0Wow, were you really going to try to catch me if I fell?<\/p>\n

Holden: \u00c2\u00a0Yeah. \u00c2\u00a0[Smile]<\/p>\n

Me: \u00c2\u00a0[Completely flattered yet dumbfounded at the chivalry] \u00c2\u00a0Wow, that’s so nice. \u00c2\u00a0You just made my night. \u00c2\u00a0[Smile]<\/p>\n

Lots of smiling going on.<\/p>\n

Holden: \u00c2\u00a0How’s your night going?<\/p>\n

Me: \u00c2\u00a0Good, I was just doing some volunteering, how about you?<\/p>\n

Holden: \u00c2\u00a0Good, I just had dinner after work with a friend. \u00c2\u00a0So do you live around here?<\/p>\n

Me: \u00c2\u00a0No, I live in ______.<\/p>\n

Some more smalltalk, chit-chatting as we are walking.<\/p>\n

Holden: \u00c2\u00a0Oh, well maybe if you’re in the area again, we can get together or something. \u00c2\u00a0Here, let me get your number. [Digs in his pocket for his phone]<\/p>\n

Me: \u00c2\u00a0[Completely surprised that this\u00c2\u00a0young man<\/em> was asking for my number] \u00c2\u00a0Ok, sure.<\/p>\n

Holden: \u00c2\u00a0I’ll call you, that way you can have mine.<\/p>\n

Me: \u00c2\u00a0[In awe of his confidence and comfort in talking and “picking me up”] Ok, I’ll cross the street with you then go that way.<\/p>\n

We cross the street.<\/p>\n

Holden: \u00c2\u00a0It was nice to meet you.<\/p>\n

Me: \u00c2\u00a0Thanks for almost catching me! \u00c2\u00a0[As I walk in the other direction]<\/p>\n

Next day, Holden texts me and says, “It was nice to meet you.”<\/p>\n

We exchange some texts about getting together. \u00c2\u00a0He says he programmed me into his phone as “___ Fallstep.”<\/p>\n

I told him he was my\u00c2\u00a0Catcher in the Rye<\/em>. . .<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We tried to make plans to meet up — he asked me if I were free for a drink that night but I wasn’t — and tried to coordinate a day in the near future, but it didn’t work out — he was potentially away for the weekend.<\/p>\n

The weekend has passed and he hasn’t contacted me again. \u00c2\u00a0And I won’t contact him (one of my dating rules not to contact the guy, I let him contact me).<\/p>\n

Well, I was flattered that such young guy would hit on me and it was fun while it lasted. \u00c2\u00a0Homeboy looks way too young for me.<\/p>\n
